Social Media Ban in Nepal 2025: How to Access Platforms Safely

07 Sep 2025

The recent announcement of a social media ban in Nepal has sparked confusion and debate. The government has introduced new regulations that require all social media agencies and platforms operating in Nepal to be formally registered under Nepali law. According to officials, the move aims to regulate digital content, control misinformation, and bring international platforms under Nepal’s jurisdiction. The bill was passed in Parliament with the justification that unregulated digital spaces have allowed unchecked hate speech, scams, and misleading ads.

However, the new law has resulted in certain apps being temporarily restricted. Reports suggest that platforms like Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and X (Twitter) are facing access blocks until they comply with local requirements. For businesses, creators, and everyday users, this sudden shift has raised the question: How do you continue to connect, share, and market in a country where social media is being restricted?

How to Access Social Media in Nepal

While the ban might prevent direct access, there are still technical ways to reach your favorite platforms. Two standard methods are changing DNS settings and using VPNs.

Changing DNS Settings

Changing your DNS (Domain Name System) helps bypass restrictions by redirecting your device to a different server. Here’s how you can do it:

On Android

Go to SettingsNetwork & Internet

Tap Private DNS

Select Private DNS provider hostname

Enter dns.google or 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com

Save and reconnect.

On iOS

Go to SettingsWi-Fi

Tap the info (i) icon next to your connected network

Scroll down to DNSConfigure DNS

Select Manual and add 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

Save changes.

On Windows

Open Control PanelNetwork and Internet

Click Change adapter settings

Right-click your active connection → Properties

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Choose Use the following DNS server addresses

Preferred: 8.8.8.8

Alternate: 8.8.4.4

Save and restart.

On Mac

Open System PreferencesNetwork

Select your Wi-Fi → Advanced

Go to the DNS tab

Click + and add 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

Apply changes.

Using a VPN

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are another widely used solution. They mask your location and give access to blocked platforms.

Free VPNs: ProtonVPN, TunnelBear, Windscribe
Paid VPNs: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark

Paid VPNs typically offer faster speeds, enhanced security, and more reliable connections compared to free options.

Pros and Cons of DNS and VPN

Changing DNS
✅ Easy to set up
✅ Free and fast
❌ May not work if restrictions are more advanced
❌ Limited privacy protection

Using VPN
✅ Works even with stricter bans
✅ Provides online privacy and security
✅ Multiple servers across countries
❌ Slows internet speed
❌ Free versions often have data limits
❌ Paid versions add extra costs

Should You Still Access Social Media?

This is where the bigger question lies. Yes, you can bypass restrictions, but should you? Since government regulations support the ban, continuously using DNS tricks or VPNs could carry potential legal implications if laws are tightened. For now, the government has not criminalized personal use of VPNs, but operating businesses or running campaigns on restricted platforms might draw legal risks.

As a content creator, agency, or business owner, it’s essential to balance staying connected and respecting legal frameworks. If you rely heavily on social media, diversifying into alternative platforms, such as local apps or investing in websites and email marketing, could help you stay ahead of future challenges.

Nepal’s social media ban highlights the growing tension between regulation and freedom of digital spaces. While technical solutions like DNS changes and VPNs enable continued access, it’s essential to understand both the benefits and risks associated with them. For individuals, it’s about staying connected with friends and communities. For businesses and agencies, it’s about navigating uncertain rules while planning more innovative digital strategies that extend beyond social media.

At Falcon Tech Nepal, we believe the future of digital is about adaptability. Whether platforms change, laws tighten, or new tools emerge, the focus should remain on creating meaningful content and building strong digital foundations that go beyond any single app.
